Y’know…if I were a lazy person, my review of Livliga’s new LivSpoons® sizes could be summed up in the following sentence: I loved you even before I knew you. Why? Because I’ve already reviewed the rest of their LivSpoon sizes and I loved them so much that the only criticism I could level at them was that I wished there was a ¼ and ⅓ cup measure.
And here we are.
But thankfully, I’m not a lazy person because I know that there are Foodies…perhaps new…perhaps new to Bariatric Foodie…who do not yet know the wonder and magic of Livliga and LivSpoons®. For you, we will go through the paces. But to get the full experience, I suggest you go back and read my review of the original LivSpoon set. It’s a thing of glory.
Moving on!
Livliga: Who the hell are they?
The best way to describe Livliga comes from their description about themselves! (To learn more, visit their website.)
Livliga is easy-to-use, chic and patented portion control tableware for everyday use in a healthier lifestyle. It is right-sized, artist-designed, eco-friendly dishware, glassware and serveware integrating the psychology of eating by providing positive visual cues. It is Doctor and RD/Nutritionist approved.
Our first encounter with Livliga was through the Obesity Action Coalition “Your Weight Matters” Convention. And in reality, that’s one of the reasons I love this company. Their products don’t just serve the bariatric community. They offer products that anyone can use to live a healthier lifestyle. And yet they invest a lot in knowing our community and needs. (As evidenced from the fact that they are multi-year sponsors of the Bariatric Foodie Pledge!)
In fact, over the past few years, they’ve put out two specific products made just for our community: the Just Right Set® bariatric bowl and plate (that link leads to my review) and the Viva Just Right Set® Bariatric Flatware (again, link to my review). So I guess what I’m trying to say is that Livliga has been very supportive of the bariatric community not only by being present but by developing products that help us live our best lives. And on a personal level, that means a lot to me!
Oh gosh…enough of the mushy stuff! Let’s move on.
LivSpoons: What the hell are they?
If you read my review of the original LivSpoons® sizes (when it came out, or just now) you know that LivSpoons® are a very stylish and functional set of measuring spoons. But I feel like in this review I can confirm to folks that they are durable.
I’ve had my original set a few years and they have held up to God knows how many crazy recipes (with crazy ingredients), a psychotic dishwasher, and a lot of half-assed hand washing by my children (when said psychotic dishwasher finally gave up the ghost).
And while they have developed an ever-so-slight patina (which I consider more a rite of passage for any of my good kitchen tools), they have held up beautifully. They’ve held their shape, they function just as they originally did, and I finally learned how to nest those suckers in my kitchen drawer for easy storage. (Wahoo!)
So overall, if you couldn’t already tell, I’m a fan!
The new ⅓ and ¼ cup sizes: Why do they matter?
Now I know a lot of you cook for your families. But for the past few years, I’ve increasingly been cooking for myself. When I had surgery my kids were little, so they ate what I ate. But now that they are grown, many times they make (or, more likely, buy) their own food and I am left to fend for myself. And as much as I brag about having the Wonder Pouch, here’s the truth.
I actually eat way less when I am cooking for one.
So I had been wishing for smaller LivSpoon sizes for a minute. Now, technically, the ¼ cup measure could be accomplished in the original set, since it had a ⅛ cup measure (a fact that I deeply appreciated on a bariatric level). Even my non-mathematical brain knows that ⅛ x 2 = ¼. (Don’t ask me any other math…but I do know that!) But still…it was nice to have this spoon because many of my recipes call for a ¼ cup of something or another.
The real game-changer, though, is the ⅓ c. measure. Because lots of recipes call for ⅓ cup of stuff and have you ever tried to do that calculation??? Dear God. I’m pretty sure my brain exploded several times trying to work it all out, since it involves not only cup measures but also tablespoons! Ain’t nobody got time for that!
And now I don’t have to worry about that because I have my beautiful ⅓ cup LivSpoon waiting at the ready to help make all my cooking and baking dreams come true. It was especially helpful as I developed the 2019 No-Flour Low-Sugar Cookie Collection.
Now I tend to use my LivSpoons® to measure ingredients, however, the smaller sizes are also very helpful for measuring out meal portions and, in fact, that’s what owner Sheila Kemper Dietrich says the smaller sizes were designed for! That actually makes a lot of sense and makes me appreciate these even more.
The Aesthetics
The two new spoons are designed to match with the original set. They both have the long handles with the curvature that allows you both to hang them off the side of a mixing bowl (upside down for stowing, right-side up to hold ingredients) and also the flat bottom of the cup part of the spoons is flat so, along with the handle, they sit upright on the counter.
They are made of polished stainless steel – an eco-friendly material – and are dishwasher safe!
So all that is to say they are good quality and, as I said earlier, my original set is hanging tight three years later. So I anticipate these new ones will last a long time as well.
The Price & Value
Looking at the Livliga website, there are several ways you can purchase LivSpoons. Let’s go over the various scenarios:
- If you already have the original LivSpoons® set but not the new ones: You can purchase either the ⅓ cup or the ¼ cup measures for $15.99 each or you can purchase them both as a set for $25.99.
- If you don’t have any LivSpoons® but I’ve convinced you they are what’s missing in your life: You can buy the original set (1 cup, ¾ cup, ½ cup, ⅛ cup) for $49.99 OR you can purchase the full-set of all six LivSpoons® for $64.99 OR you could purchase the original set and either the ⅓ or ¼ cup individually. (Or, or, or…)
Bottom line: the original sizes will always come in the set of four, but you can get the new sizes as individuals, mkay? I don’t know why you’d want to do that though? What kind of home-wrecker does that? Tears a family apart (grumble, grumble…)
As for the value, one might say that’s an investment for measuring spoons, but listen. I cook a lot. I bake a lot. I enjoy being in the kitchen. So my kitchen tools have to be functional and durable. But I’m also in the place where I want them to be stylish. LivSpoons® tick all three of those boxes.
They are functional in that they have a long-handle for good grip, with the curvature that allows me to stow ingredients without spilling them. They are durable in that, as I have said, ad nauseum, I still have my original set that I’ve had a few years and they still look nice and work perfectly. And they are stylish in that not only do I think so, but my 20 year-old daughter (who loves to bake) refuses to use any other measuring spoons and, more than once, online and in-person, I’ve gotten compliments on my “sexy” measuring spoons.
So…to me, all that for $64.99 is a steal. But remember: during the Bariatric Foodie Pledge you don’t have to pay that much! That’s because Livliga is offering an exclusive discount during the Pledge. From January 26 – March 2, 2020, take 15% off any one item on the Livliga website with code BFPledge15!
The Verdict
Do you really have to ask.Go buy the damn spoons! And then cook me something. 😉
