Let’s just take a quick moment to revel in our memories of apple crumbles. If you don’t have a memory I’ll lend mine. Picture it. Suburban Maryland. The 1980’s. You know…back when it snowed when it was supposed to and half your paycheck didn’t go toward gassing up your car. Yeah…the good old days.
This was mainly a Thanksgiving offering that was passed in my family. And it was GOOD! There were buttery apples seasoned with cinnamon, cloves, ginger. Then there was the crunchy topping, which in my childhood was made out of butter and a combination of brown sugar, flour and crushed corn flakes. Mmmmmmm. What a memory!
I can’t have that anymore, of course, but, my weight loss surgery brothers and sisters, I have some good news. You, too, can have apple crumble. No, this is not a drill. No, I am not messing with you!
This has been a favorite dessert in my household since my surgery in 2008. My kids love it. My family loves it. The first time the family became aware of its yumminess they maybe loved it a bit too much. (I’m not resentful!) But the point is I think you are going to love it too. Or at least I hope so. Enjoy!

Sweet, tart apples, cinnamon, and crunch from fiber cereal. Make sure you get your portion of this warm fall treat first. It's sure to be a crowd pleaser!
In a pan, melt "butter." Add apples, no-calorie sweetener, cinnamon, and nutmeg and sautee until apples are considerably softened. Set aside.
In a dry pan, toast the hazelnuts and walnuts until browned.
In a blender or food processor, combine cereal, remaining sweetener and nuts until a crumb mixture forms.
Place apples in a casserole dish (I used a 9 x 13). Top with crumb mixture and bake at 350 for about 30 minutes or until apple mixture is bubbling up through openings in the crumb AND crumb mixture is brown.
You know what I love about this? The first time I made it my husband loved it. He was at a point that if I told him it was in any way made healthier he wouldn't have liked it (good thing he didn't ask lol). Now that he is wanting to eat healthier and I told him that I was going to make this he told me he'd rather I didn't. Until I told him that it came from your recipe! 🙂 Thank you for making something that tastes good to both post ops and non ops. 🙂

The ingredients call for 3/4 cup no calorie sweetener. In the first step of the instructions is says to add one cup of Splenda and then in step two is says to add the remaining Splenda. I would like to make this soon buy I am uncertain about the amounts. Thank you for your help.
Yeah so that was clear as mud, right??? Sorry! I fixed it. Basically you use sweetener both for the filling and the topping. So you use 3/4 c. for the filling, 2 tbsp. for the topping. Or you could use none for the topping if that seems too much for you. Play with your food!

Do you know of a high fiber gluten free option for the cereal?
Is there anything that I can substitute in for the nuts? I really want to make this for a dinner I’m going to but the host is allergic to nuts…
You can simply leave them out. I have on many occasions! Just use your favorite (nut-free) crushed cereal on top. You’ll still get plenty of crunch.
